Effect of Antioxidants Supplementation on Aging and Longevity
نویسندگان
چکیده
If aging is due to or contributed by free radical reactions, as postulated by the free radical theory of aging, lifespan of organisms should be extended by administration of exogenous antioxidants. This paper reviews data on model organisms concerning the effects of exogenous antioxidants (antioxidant vitamins, lipoic acid, coenzyme Q, melatonin, resveratrol, curcumin, other polyphenols, and synthetic antioxidants including antioxidant nanoparticles) on the lifespan of model organisms. Mechanisms of effects of antioxidants, often due to indirect antioxidant action or to action not related to the antioxidant properties of the compounds administered, are discussed. The legitimacy of antioxidant supplementation in human is considered.

P-110: Effect of Oral Zinc Supplementation on Total Antioxidants Status and An-tiperoxidant Activity in Spermatozoa of Patients with Oligoasthenospermia
Background: Oligoasthenospermia (OAS) is a condition characterized by low sperm count associated with low sperm motility. Medical treatment is not known in allopathic system for treatment of oligoasthenospermia. Homeopathic medicine is effective in more than 95% patients. Oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant levels have been projected as a potential factors involved in the pathophysiology...
متن کاملMurine models of premature ageing for the study of diet-induced immune changes: improvement of leucocyte functions in two strains of old prematurely ageing mice by dietary supplementation with sulphur-containing antioxidants
Several immune functions are markers of health, biological age and predictors of longevity. A chronic oxidative and inflammatory state is the main cause of ageing and the immune system is involved in the rate of ageing. Thus, several murine models of premature ageing have been proposed owing to their early immunosenescence and oxidative stress, such as ovariectomised rats and mice, obese rats a...

Aging is the outcome of the progressive accumulation of different alterations in the body which accompanied with gradual decrease of the efficiencies of normal physiological functions and the capacity to maintain homeostasis that lead to the increase in disease probability and the death of people. The researchers have done different experiments especially on animal models for the perception of ...
متن کاملEffects of antioxidant supplementation on the aging process
The free radical theory of aging hypothesizes that oxygen-derived free radicals are responsible for the age-related damage at the cellular and tissue levels. In a normal situation, a balanced-equilibrium exists among oxidants, antioxidants and biomolecules. Excess generation of free radicals may overwhelm natural cellular antioxidant defences leading to oxidation and further contributing to cel...
متن کاملDietary and microbiome factors determine longevity in Caenorhabditis elegans
Diet composition affects organismal health. Nutrient uptake depends on the microbiome. Caenorhabditis elegans fed a Bacillus subtilis diet live longer than those fed the standard Escherichia coli diet. Here we report that this longevity difference is primarily caused by dietary coQ, an antioxidant synthesized by E. coli but not by B. subtilis. CoQ-supplemented E. coli fed worms have a lower oxi...
